Layout & Floor Assembly

Plan and pre-assemble your hexagon grid on the floor before mounting to the ceiling.

Clear a large area on your garage floor that matches the dimensions of your lighting system. This workspace will allow you to lay out all tubes and connectors to match your desired hexagon pattern before committing to ceiling installation.

Why this matters: Floor assembly helps you verify that you have all necessary parts, ensures the pattern aligns correctly, and allows you to identify any issues before drilling into your ceiling. This step can save hours of troubleshooting later.

What you'll need:

  • All LED tubes from your kit
  • All modular connectors (V, Y, and straight connectors)
  • Clean floor space approximately 16 × 8 feet
  • Installation diagram or reference photo

Pro Tip

Take a photo of your completed floor layout from directly above. This reference image will be invaluable when transferring the pattern to your ceiling.

2

Connecting the Grid

Assemble the LED tubes and modular connectors to create your hexagon pattern.

Begin snapping the LED tubes into the modular connectors. Your kit includes three types of connectors: V-connectors (120-degree angle), Y-connectors (three-way junction), and straight connectors (180-degree). Each connector type serves a specific purpose in creating the hexagon pattern.

When inserting tubes into connectors, push firmly until you hear and feel a distinct click. This click indicates that the tube has fully seated and made proper electrical contact. A loose connection will result in flickering or non-functioning sections.

Assembly process:

  • Start from the center of your pattern and work outward
  • Align each tube carefully before applying pressure to snap it in
  • Listen for the click sound confirming secure connection
  • Gently tug each tube after insertion to verify it's locked in place
  • Keep the assembled grid flat on the floor to prevent stress on connections

Important

Do not force tubes into connectors at an angle. Misalignment can damage the electrical contacts inside the connector. If a tube doesn't slide in smoothly, remove it and check for obstructions or damage.

3

Mounting to the Ceiling

Secure your assembled grid to the ceiling using the appropriate mounting method for your ceiling type.

For Drywall or Wood Ceilings:

Use the provided mounting clips and screws to secure the grid directly to your ceiling. Each connector point should have a mounting clip attached. For standard installations, the grid mounts flush or near-flush to the ceiling surface.

  • Locate ceiling joists using a stud finder for maximum support
  • Mark mounting points on the ceiling using your floor layout as reference
  • Pre-drill pilot holes to prevent drywall cracking
  • Attach mounting clips to connectors before lifting the grid
  • Work with a helper to lift and position the assembled grid
  • Secure center points first, then work outward to edges

To lower the lights from the ceiling: Use the included chains to suspend the grid at your desired height. This is particularly useful for garages with high ceilings or when you want the light closer to your work area. Attach chains to the mounting clips before securing them to the ceiling.

For Drop Ceilings or Metal Grid Ceilings:

The installation process is simpler for drop ceiling systems. Use the provided clips to fasten the hexagon light connectors directly to the existing ceiling grid structure.

  • Remove ceiling tiles in the installation area
  • Attach clips to the metal grid framework at connector points
  • Ensure clips are tight and secure before releasing weight
  • Replace or adjust ceiling tiles around the lighting system

This method creates a clean, integrated look where the hexagon lights appear to be part of the ceiling structure itself.

Safety Note

Always use a stable ladder or scaffolding when working overhead. Have at least one helper to assist with lifting and positioning the grid. The assembled system is lightweight but awkward to handle alone.

4

Powering the System

Connect your lighting system to power and test all connections.

Plug-and-Play Installation:

Most hexagon lighting kits include a power cord designed to plug directly into a standard electrical outlet (110V in North America, 220V in many other regions). This is the simplest installation method and requires no electrical expertise.

  • Locate the power input connector on your assembled grid
  • Connect the included power cord to the grid's power input
  • Route the power cord along the ceiling to the nearest outlet
  • Use cable clips or conduit to secure and conceal the cord if desired
  • Plug into outlet and test the system

Hardwired Installation (Optional):

For a cleaner, more permanent installation without visible cords, the system can be hardwired directly to your electrical system through a junction box. This method provides a professional finish and eliminates the need for an accessible outlet.

  • Hire a licensed electrician for this installation method
  • Electrician will install a junction box at the power input location
  • System will be wired directly to your home's electrical circuit
  • Can be connected to a wall switch for convenient on/off control

Cost consideration: While hardwiring adds to installation cost, it provides the cleanest aesthetic and can add value to your property. Expect to pay $150-$300 for professional electrical work depending on your location and complexity.

Electrical Safety

Never attempt to hardwire the system yourself unless you are a licensed electrician. Improper electrical work can create fire hazards, void warranties, and violate local building codes. Always turn off power at the breaker before any electrical work.

! Pro Tips for Success

Power Placement Strategy

Before you begin mounting, determine which corner of the grid is closest to your power source. Plan your assembly so the power input connector ends up in this corner. This minimizes visible wiring and reduces the length of power cord needed. If using the plug-in method, consider installing a new outlet on the ceiling if no convenient outlet exists nearby.

Leveling is Critical

Use a laser level to ensure the grid is perfectly straight before drilling final mounting holes. Even a slight tilt will be obvious once the lights are on, creating an unprofessional appearance. Mark your mounting points carefully and double-check level before committing. A crooked installation is difficult and time-consuming to correct after the fact.

Keep Spare Parts Accessible

Most manufacturers include 1-2 extra LED tubes in each kit. Store these spare tubes in a safe, labeled location where you can easily find them years from now. While the LEDs are extremely durable and long-lasting, having replacements on hand means you can quickly fix any accidental damage during installation or future maintenance without waiting for shipping.

Test Before Final Mounting

Once your grid is fully assembled on the floor, connect the power cord and plug it in to test all connections before lifting it to the ceiling. This allows you to identify and fix any loose connections or non-functioning tubes while the grid is still easily accessible. It's much easier to troubleshoot on the floor than overhead on a ladder.

Consider Future Access

When planning your installation, think about future maintenance needs. Leave enough space around the grid perimeter to access mounting points if you ever need to adjust or remove sections. Avoid installing the grid too close to walls or other ceiling fixtures that might make future access difficult.
